How to choose strings

Synthetic strings

There is a wide range of synthetic-core strings to choose from, so you should be able to find the best to complement your instrument. There are big differences in characteristics, quality and prices. Some, usually more expensive ones, produce somewhat similar tone to gut strings. But most of them do not produce as complex sound as gut strings do but they give more power, quicker response and better articulation.

The violin set that I prefer is Thomastik Rondo with optional Westminster 27,5 E-string.

Metal strings

I can recommend only one set of strings with metal core - D'addario Helicore. These are the only metal strings (that I know of) that have a somewhat similar tone to those with gut or synthetic core. You get a good tone for decent price and they last long. That makes them a great choice for beginners and amateur players.
